SACRED LAND 2019-2020
In Native American languages, the spoken word conveys that all things of nature are people, not things or objects. I paint this truth of the land and all natural things. The rocks, mountains, clouds, fire, waves, rivers and trees speak to me. They have voices and the land has a story. If we move through our daily lives with intention and mindfulness in nature or otherwise, our story becomes a continuous ceremony rather than mundane tasks. The land reminds us of this as we travel through it in awe and wonder.
My inquiry in art and life is a continuous quest to live all movements completely in line with my spiritual essence. I move through the land intentionally and collect small tokens along the way for ceremonies to later honor mother earth in visual prayers. My paintings consist of the alpine tundra of the Rocky Mountains, the red rocks of Utah, the Maine coastline, a canyon in Hawaii and landscapes of my imagination. Although the sublime is most easily found in the grand most obvious of places, do not forget to look in the everyday as it is also found in the clouds on a walk down the street. Gifts await us when we really look. Awaken to the language of the earth. Aboriginal and Indigenous people around the world know this language well.
I am not just creating art when I am in my studio. When we live in unison with all beings and nature our life is art. When I am dancing, writing poetry, planting seeds in the earth, hiking in the mountains or painting in my studio it all becomes one act. An act of living intentionally, mindfully and respectfully. The act of following my soul’s calling to light my internal fire. The paint simply dances across the canvas as poetry. This series is one of growth and the land is a catalyst.
